Frère Anthony von Taizé (French Frère "brother"), also An Seon Jae or An Sonjae , (* 1942 in Truro , United Kingdom as Anthony Graham Teague ) is a British-Korean Anglist and professor emeritus for English language and literature. He lives in Seoul ( South Korea ). Since 1969 (profession: 1974) he has been the brother of the Taizé Community .

Life

From 1960 to 1969 An Seon Jae studied Middle and Modern Languages ​​at the University of Oxford . In 1969 he entered the ecumenical community of the Brothers of Taizé (France), where he made his profession at Easter 1974 ( religious name : Brother Anthony). From 1977 to 1980 he lived in the Philippines before he went to Korea in 1980, invited by Cardinal Kim , where he lived in a small community in Seoul with other Taizé brothers.

Since 1980 he has taught at Sogang University in Seoul and in 1985 became a full professor of English language and literature. From 1992 to 1994 he was chairman of the faculty. From 1998 to 2000 he was President of the English Studies Association of Korea (Medieval and Early Modern Period). In 2000 he was responsible for the British & American Cultures major and from 2001 to 2003 chairman of the English Department.

In 1994, Brother Anthony von Taizé became a Korean citizen with the Korean name An Seon Jae / An Sonjae.

An Seon Jae wrote numerous books and articles on English literature and translated works of modern Korean literature, beginning in 1988 with poems by Ku Sang . By the end of 2014, he had published over 30 volumes, mostly with Korean poetry.

He retired on March 1, 2007. In 2010 he was appointed chairing professor at Dankook University with special assignments at the International Creative Writing Center. He has been President of the Royal Asiatic Society Korea Branch since 2011 .
