Ku Sang

Ku Sang , born Ku Sang-jun, 구상준, (born September 16, 1919 in Seoul , † May 11, 2004 ) was a South Korean writer and poet .

Life

Ku Sang graduated from Nihon University with a degree in religious studies . After he had published his anti-communist poems Weg (길) and At the end of the day (여명 도) in the poetry collection fragrance (응향 [凝香]) of the Wonsan writers' association in 1946 , he fled to South Korea. Ku served as the deputy director of the group of writers appointed to cover the activities of the South Korean military during the Korean War . He has also served as the chief editor of Yeongnam Daily , editor of Kyunghyang Shinmun, and lecturer in poetry at Chungang University . He was a member of the Korean Art Academy .

Ku's poems commented on the injustice, inequality and absurdity of modern society. His works are strongly influenced by his Christian faith, which served the poet as a constant source of personal penance. They reflect the poet's search for a poetic aesthetic that has a solid ontological foundation. Ku rejects both an artistic sensibility that lacks spiritual depth and gross intellect that lacks historical awareness. The poet's attitude manifests itself in his collection of poems entitled Poems from the Ashes (초토 의 시) as if by itself.

These poems, based on Ku's own experiences from the Korean War, deal with the suffering caused by the war on the way to salvation. In addition to his Christian basis, Ku includes other spiritual and religious influences in his works. They also relate to the founding legends of the Korean people, traditional Korean culture , the elite culture of Chinese characters , nature, the tradition of contemplation in Sŏn Buddhism, and Taoist beliefs. Ku seamlessly fuses these different strands of belief with the Christian belief in salvation. In his constant contemplation of Korean tradition and religious beliefs, he brings the depth of human existence together with a constant awareness of historical significance. At the same time he tries to capture the realm of absolute faith with his poems. Ku published various collections of poetry such as B. Poems by Ku Sang (구상 시집), Poems from the Ashes (초토 의 시), On Dreyfus's Bank (드레퓌스 의 벤치 에서) and A Cycle of Poems by Ku Sang (구상 연작 시집).

A literature prize is named after him.
