Ana Bilić (born September 28, 1962 in Zagreb ) is an Austrian writer , filmmaker , playwright and linguist of Croatian origin.

Life

Ana Bilić was born in Zagreb, where she spent the first seven years of her life. Then she moved with her parents and her brother to Kutina and after another seven years to Ivanić-Grad. Her father worked first as a public prosecutor, later as a district judge, held the function of district court president and later he worked as a lawyer, her mother was a housewife and after her divorce she worked as a factory worker and foreman.

After eight years of compulsory school, Ana Bilić attended preparatory middle school education in Ivanić degree for two years and then the middle school for administration and justice in Zagreb as a trend-setting middle school education - at that time the grammar school system was abolished in favor of subject-related upper school education, so-called "Šuvarova reforma". Because of her excellent school success throughout her secondary school education, she was exempted from the Matura.

She studied law at the Faculty of Law in Zagreb and graduated in 1987. In her third year of study, she enrolled in the Faculty of Political Science in Zagreb, studying journalism, but of a total of four semesters she attended only two. After completing her law degree, she worked as a trainee at the Zagreb District Court and passed the bar exam in 1990. She then worked as a lawyer in her father's law firm for five years. She got married in 1992 and in 1995 she emigrated to Vienna with her then husband and daughter.

Between 1998 and 2000 she attended and completed the nostrification course in law at the University of Vienna . During her studies she worked as a translator for legal texts for the Berlin publishing house Nomos. As a literary author, she first began to write in Croatian and her first prose articles appeared in periodicals such as "Quorum", "Rival" and "Plima". Even later she participated with her literary contributions in the program of magazines such as "Književna Rijeka", "Nova Istra", in Austria in " Podium ", " Driesch " and "Loog". In 1999, when she had already settled in Vienna, her first two prose books were published in Croatia by the Konzor publishing house under the name Snježana Bilić.

Her German prose debut “The small piece from the big sky” was published in 2002 in German-speaking countries by the Hoffmann und Campe publishing house under the name Ana Bilić, and since then she has also used this name for all other literary works. From then on she works as a freelance writer. She is represented in numerous prose and poetry anthologies.

Since 2003 she has also worked as a literary translator and translates prose works by Austrian and German authors in literary magazines such as "Književna Rijeka" (Croatia), "Riječi" (Croatia), "Nova Istra" (Croatia), "Riječ" (Bosnia and Herzegovina) Herzegovina). In 2005, together with Alida Bremer, translated Asmir Kujović's volume of poetry, “Das promisse Land”, into German.

After the publication of the first novel in German, she also began to write her first theater texts. In 2008 she won the theater prize "Exil Literature Prize 08 - Dramatikeinnenrpreis 2008" awarded by Wiener Wortstaetten (led by Hans Escher and Bernhard Studlar) and in this season 2008/2009 she was a scholarship holder of Wiener Wortstaetten. In the same year she attended a crash course in acting as part of a VHS program in Vienna.

In the first season of the script workshop “Diverse Stories”, organized by Witcraft Szenario Wien, she was a member in 2009/2010 and in 2010 she released the first short film “Home Sweet Home” as a director and screenwriter. In 2018 she attended the film editing and editing seminar at the Munich Film Workshop.

In 2010/2011 Ana Bilić attended the radio play and radio art seminar with Götz Fritsch at the University of Music and Performing Arts Vienna, where she also deals with radio play.

From 2008 she started her artistic collaboration with Danilo Wimmer , the composer, music producer and sound designer. After the divorce from their first husband, they married in 2011. They produce films, music videos and radio plays together and he is responsible for the book design for their works, which are self-published.

Ana Bilić started working in the field of languages ​​in 2004. She teaches the Croatian language at various language institutes and academies in Vienna. From 2010 to 2012 she worked in the field of literature and multilingualism and held various workshops with upper school classes in Vienna. As of 2012, their textbooks for learning Croatian were included in the textbook list for the subject Croatian with the notification of the BMUKK Austria. Since 2015 she has been the author and editor of the book and audio book series “Croatian light” and “Croatian made easy”.

Ana Bilić works as a freelance writer and filmmaker in Vienna.
