Ana María Pastor Julián (born November 11, 1957 in Cubillos , Zamora province ) is a Spanish politician of the Partido Popular . Since July 2016 she has been President of the Congreso de los Diputados , the Spanish lower house .

life and career

Pastor Julián studied medicine and surgery at the University of Salamanca . After her studies, she worked in the public service in Pontevedra .

Since 2000 she has been a member of the Congreso de los Diputados for the constituency of Pontevedra. She has held positions in the Ministry of Education, Culture and Sport, the Presidency Ministry and the Ministry of the Interior. From 2002 to 2004 she was the Spanish Minister of Health. On December 22, 2011, she was appointed Minister of Construction and Transport in the Rajoy I cabinet. After the early elections in June 2016 , Pastor Julián was elected President of the Lower House in July 2016 with the support of the Ciudadanos party .
