Anastasio Somoza Portocarrero

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Anastasio Somoza Portocarrero (born December 18, 1951 in Miami ) was a high-ranking officer of the Nicaraguan National Guard during the dictatorship of the Somoza clan until 1979 .

Somoza Portocarrero is the eldest son of Anastasio Somoza Debayle and Hope Portocarrero . Like his father, he attended the private high school La Salle Academy in New York City , studied at Harvard University and received military training in Great Britain . In Nicaragua he was nicknamed "El Chigüín" ("little boy").

Under his father's rule, he was given a high post in the National Guard. He is charged with the murder of the opposition publisher Pedro Joaquín Chamorro on his initiative . In the increasingly violent civil war against the Sandinista , he used artillery and air force on the orders of his father to destroy cities that had fallen into the hands of the Sandinista. These attacks killed 30,000 to 50,000 people.

When his father fell, he too had to emigrate. He was in exile in the United States and Guatemala and has been the head of the Somoza family since his father was murdered, and the family is still trying to regain possession of their expropriated property.

In 2000 there were efforts by some political forces to have him return to the country and run for president. Somoza refused, fearing that his appearance would rekindle the violence as some groups, notably the Sandinista, had threatened armed protest.

With Marisa Celasco Oberholzer, who has since divorced from him, Somoza has two sons and a daughter.
