Hope Portocarrero Somoza Baldocchi (born June 28, 1929 in Tampa , Florida , † October 5, 1991 in Miami , United States ) was the wife of Anastasio Somoza Debayle , who was President of Nicaragua from 1967 to 1972 and from 1974 to 1979. Her husband was the penultimate member of the Somoza clan , which had held the presidency since 1934.

Life

She was the daughter of Nestor Portocarrero Gross and Blanca Debayle de Portocarrero and was one of the richest families in Nicaragua. Their family tree included Spanish, Italian, French, and German ancestors.

She grew up in the United States, was fluent in Spanish, English, Italian and French and graduated from Barnard College in New York City with an interest in art .

On December 10, 1950, she married Anastasio Somoza Debayle, the second son of the then President of Nicaragua, Anastasio Somoza Garcías and Commander in Chief of the National Guard . The wedding was celebrated in the Cathedral of Managua with over 4,000 invited guests under the direction of the Archbishop of Managua, Jose Antonio Lezcano . With Anastasio Somoza Debayle she had five children Anastasio , Julio, Carolina, Carla, and Roberto.

When her husband was elected President of Nicaragua through the early death of his brother Luís Somoza Debayle , she became the First Lady of Nicaragua and then became the country's style icon. During this time she took on various diplomatic tasks at the side of her husband, such as a. the visit to Richard Nixon or that of Tennō Hirohito . She also took over the presidency of the Junta Nacional de Asistencia y Previsión Social (Community for National Social Security). Under her aegis, the Nicaraguan National Theater, the National Conservatory of Music, the Chamber of Culture, the General Archives of the National Library, the National Museum, a children's hospital, the women's clinic of Managua and the orphanage "The Hope" were built.

At the end of the 1970s, the couple became estranged and Hope moved to London , where she married Archie Baldocchi, Anastasios, who was a wealthy Salvadoran , after the murder .

She died in 1991 in Miami on cancer .
