José Antonio Lezcano y Ortega also Monseñór Lezcano (born April 10, 1865 in Granada , Nicaragua , † January 6, 1952 in Managua ) was the first archbishop of the Archbishopric of Managua from 1913 to 1952 and President of Parliament from 1915 to 1916.

Life

José Antonio Lezcano y Ortega entered the San José Seminary in Costa Rica in 1883 on the advice of his uncle, the canon and archpriest José Antonio Lezcano Morales . He was ordained a priest on April 15, 1888 . He was rector of the seminary of León for 25 years .

Lezcano was also politically involved. He was expelled from Nicaragua during the reign of José Santos Zelaya .

With the US military intervention in Nicaragua 1909–1925 , the Partido Conservador de Nicaragua came to power. In 1912, Lezcano y Ortega was elected as a delegate to the Constituent Assembly; from 1915 and 1916 he was President of Parliament .

Archbishop of Managua

On December 2, 1913, Pope Pius X divided the previous diocese of Nicaragua into the dioceses of León, Granada, Matagalpa and the apostolic vicariate of Bluefields with the Bull Quan Juxta apostolicum effatum , thus creating, with effect from December 10, 1913, the Archdiocese of Managua.

Lezcano y Ortega was consecrated on May 3, 1914 by the bishop Simeón Pereira y Castellón, the first bishop of León and last of Nicaragua, and by José Cándido Piñol y Batres, the first bishop of Granada in the cathedral in Managua.

He died on Epiphany 1952 and was buried in the crypt under the main altar of the cathedral. In the earthquake on December 23, 1972, the cathedral collapsed above him. He was exhumed in 1982 and buried in the Church of Saint Anne in West Managua.

Act

Lezcano was a founding member and long-time secretary of the Academia Nicaragüense de la Lengua in 1928 . In February 1951 Francisco Franco awarded him the Order de Alfonso X el Sabio through the ambassador Gaspar Sanz y Tovarden .

Lezcano y Ortega had the Belgian engineer Pablo Dambach design the Santiago de Managua Cathedral , which was opened in 1938 by President Anastasio Somoza García . The cathedral was only consecrated in 1946 by Lezcano y Ortega. The cathedral collapsed during an earthquake in 1972.
