Anatolijs Gorbunovs
Anatolijs Gorbunovs (born February 10, 1942 in Pilda, Ludza district , Latvian SSR ) is a Latvian politician.
Life
From 1974 to 1988 Anatolijs Gorbunovs held various positions in the Communist Party of the Latvian SSR , the highest ranking being that of the Secretary of the Central Committee. In contrast to the large majority in the party, Gorbunovs supported the Latvian independence movement.
From 1988 to 1995 he was speaker of the Latvian Parliament, first of the Supreme Soviet of the Latvian SSR , then, after independence in 1991, of the Saeima . As speaker of parliament, Gorbunovs took over the role of head of state until Guntis Ulmanis was elected president.
In 1993 Gorbunovs joined the Latvian Way party . He remained the Saeima spokesman until 1995 and a member until 2002. From 1995 to 2002 he held various government positions as Minister for Regional Development, Transport and Deputy Prime Minister .
