Anatoly Petrovich Orlov

Anatoli Petrovich Orlow ( Russian Анато́лий Петро́вич Орло́в ; born March 25, 1879 in Rybniza , Danilow district , Yaroslavl governorate ; † December 21, 1937 ) was a Russian Orthodox clergyman, theologian and church historian .

Life

Anatoly Orlov was born as the son of the priest Pyotr Gurjewitsch Orlov and his wife Alexandra Alexejewna. He studied at the Yaroslavl Theological Seminary between 1900 and 1904, then at the Moscow Theological Academy, which he completed with a thesis on The Teaching of St. Hilary of Poitiers on the Trinity . He completed a master’s degree in 1908 with the thesis: Trinitarian Basics by St. Hilary of Poitiers . From 1909 to 1910 he attended theology lectures at the universities of Berlin and Munich.

From 1916 was a professor of the history and doctrine of sects in Russia.

Between September 10, 1917 and 1922 he was rector of the Spiritual Academy in Moscow. He was arrested during the campaign to dispossess the church and sentenced to death after a trial. The sentence was changed to 5 years in a labor camp. After an amnesty he was released in 1924, but arrested again on March 24th and sentenced to three years in exile in Narym . He was arrested again and sentenced to prison camps in 1931. He served his sentence in Arkhangelsk . After his release he became a priest in Tarussa . There he was arrested by an NKVD troyka on September 22, 1937 and sentenced to death. He was shot dead on December 21, 1937.
