Anaxandros
Anaxandros ( Greek Ἀνάξανδρος Anáxandros , German , ruler of man ' , latin Anaxander ), son of Eurykrates was in Greek mythology a king of Sparta from the House of Agiaden . He ruled over Laconia and Messenia . With his wife Leandris he had a son named Eurykratidas .
Second Messenian War
In the fourth year of the 23rd Olympiad (685/4 BC) the subjugated Messenians revolted. When the Second Messenian War broke out , Aristomenes had the king of Orchomenus , Aristocrates , and Pantaleon , the general from Pisa, as allies. Anaxandros was defeated in two battles, supported by Zeuxidamos or Anaxidamos , the kings of the Spartan house of the Eurypontids .
Only after 17 years could it be in 668/7 BC. The Spartans gain victory and drive out the Messenians. Only the coastal cities remained in Messenian hands. Among the women Anaxandros brought home captive was Cleo, the Thetis priestess . She chose his wife Leandris as her slave. She noticed that Cleo was carrying the cult image of the goddess and therefore had a thetis shrine built in Sparta to keep the wooden image.
After Anaxandros' death, his son Eurykratidas succeeded him.
