The Anchor Bay (German: anchor bay) is a bay in the northwest of the island of Malta . It is located about two kilometers west of Mellieħa . In 1979, the film Popeye was shot here.
History of the bay
The name of the bay comes from the many Roman anchors that were found here on the bottom of the bay. Some of them are now in the Maritime Museum in Vittoriosa .
Until the late 1970s, Anchor Bay was a quiet and tranquil place that was only known to a small group of divers and locals. Then the backdrop town Popeye Village was created here , which the director Robert Altman had built in 1979 for the Popeye film The Sailor with the Hard Blow as a romantic pirate village Sweethaven with wooden houses and plank paths . Today the place has been converted into an amusement park. After two fires, Popeye Village was rebuilt in the same style.
Diving
Anchor Bay is a popular spot for diving and snorkeling. In the bay is the Scorpion Cave , a cave about 8 meters deep and a small shipwreck is at the entrance to the bay. The bay is surrounded by steep walls with an old concrete pier in the middle, to which a road leads from the southern side of the bay. From here you can easily reach the water via a ladder.
