The Andalusian barbel ( Luciobarbus sclateri , Syn .: Barbus sclateri ) is a species of barb endemic only to the Iberian Peninsula. In Spain the species is popularly called Barbo Andaluz or Barbo Gitano and in Portugal Barbo-do-Sul or Barbo-do- Algarve .

Systematics

The Andalusian barbel belongs to the genus Luciobarbus . The common Iberian barbel ( Luciobarbus bocagei ) was originally classified as a subspecies of Luciobarbus sclateri .

description

The coloration of the species forms a sharp contrast between the dark gray-brown back and yellowish light sides. It becomes an average of 30 to 40 centimeters long. In 2000, an Andalusian barbel weighing 4 kilograms was caught in Lago Las Tortugas, but catches of nine to 11 kilograms are also guaranteed.

distribution

Distribution area of the Andalusian barbel

The Andalusian barbel occurs in the southern part of the Iberian Peninsula in Spain and Portugal . It lives in the middle and lower reaches of Füssen such. B. the Guadalquivir , Rio Segura , Rio Mira, Rio Jandula or Campo de Gibraltar.

Way of life

Luciobarbus sclateri is not very picky about its habitat, it inhabits a number of water types with the exception of small, very cold mountain streams with strong currents. It is very common in flat rivers with low currents. The spawning season begins between May and June, after the males have reached sexual maturity and are at least eight centimeters in length at two to four years of age. The females are sexually mature only at six or seven years and a length of 11 to 16 centimeters. Despite their mostly small body size, Luciobarbus sclateri is one of the long-lived animal species with a maximum age of 18 years.

use

The Andalusian barbel is a local sport fish.

Endangerment status

The Andalusian barbel is not classified as endangered by the IUCN. Local populations can be threatened in very dry summers when rivers are reduced to small, isolated pools with very low water levels. The habitat fragmentation is thereby increased. Recently, the importance of water quality on the living conditions of the Andalusian barbel was investigated.
