Andenes fyr is a lighthouse in the municipality of Andøy , province ( Fylke ) Nordland . The lighthouse was built in 1859.
location
Andesnes fyr is located on the northern tip of Andøya Island , which is part of Andøy Municipality. The lighthouse is the northernmost in the province of Nordland and the fourth tallest in all of Norway. Remnants of the railway line that was used to build a pier north of the Andesnes fyr are located near the facility .
history
The lighthouse began operating in 1859 after a need for it due to fishing and increasing shipping traffic in the area. Before that, in February 1821, 30 fishermen were killed in an accident. In 1948 a radio beacon was also installed, and in 1953 the system was electrified. Since 1978, operations have been automated without any on-site workers. In 1999 the building was listed and the lighthouse is now used by Andøymuseet for guided tours.
