Andi Meister (born November 17, 1938 in Lüganuse ) is an Estonian engineer and politician.

Life

Andi Meister completed his engineering studies at the Polytechnic Institute in Tallinn in 1962 in the field of traffic routes and bridge construction.

He then worked for the Kohtla-Järve Transport Administration and the Ministry of Car Transport and Transport Infrastructure of the Estonian SSR , among others .

At the beginning of 1990, Meister joined the Estonian democratic independence movement, which demanded free elections and separation from the Soviet Union. From 1990 to 1992, Meister headed the International Relations Department in the Ministry of Transport and Infrastructure of the Republic of Estonia. In 1992 he temporarily moved to the Estonian State Chancellery.

From October 1992 to November 1994 Andi Meister was Minister of Transport and Infrastructure in Prime Minister Mart Laar's cabinet . He held the same office from November 1994 to April 1995 in the coalition government under Prime Minister Andres Tarand . Meister belonged to the " Party of National Independence of Estonia " (Eesti Rahvusliku Sõltumatuse Party - ERSP) .

On September 28, 1994, during Master's time as Minister of Transport, the ferry Estonia sank on the way from Tallinn to Stockholm . More than 850 people were killed in the disaster. After the accident, Meister became chairman of the first Estonian-Finnish-Swedish commission of inquiry, which was supposed to investigate the causes of the downfall. He held this office until 1996. He processed his impressions in the book Lõpetamata logiraamat. Mayday Estonia III , released in Tallinn in 1997.

Private life

Andi Meister has been married to Ingrid Luik for the second time since 1993.
