Andorsengården is a townhouse located at Store Elvgata 5/6 in the center of the Norwegian town of Mandal . The house was built by Mathias Knutzen from 1801 to 1805. The compartments of the half-timbered house are lined and the walls are paneled on the outside. Architecturally, it fits very well into the cityscape of Mandal, which is characterized by old wooden houses, even if the church is the only building constructed in a similar way.

history

The building was built during the boom during the Napoleonic Wars . This was followed by an economic recession and Mathias Knutzen had to sell the building to the consul Gulow Andorsen for 1,500 Norwegian speciedaler in 1822 . That was a comparatively small sum, because Knutzen himself had needed around 44,000 Norwegian speciedaler to complete the house. So the building got its current name after Gulow Andorsen.

In 1909 Maria and Magda Salvesen, the two daughters of the shipowner Christian Salvesen , bought the house. They were the grandsons of Gulow Andorsen. In 1954 the building became the property of the city of Mandal.

Construction and exhibition

Andorsengården consists of two interconnected buildings, the main house and a farm building. In the main building there are 20 rooms, including some larger halls. During the time of Knutzen, Andorsen and Salvenen, the halls were used for large social events and celebrations. Today the main building houses the Mandal City Museum. From 1956 to 2012 the city library was housed on the first floor. The second floor houses an art collection dedicated to artists closely related to the city, including Adolph Tidemand , Olaf Isaachsen , Amaldus Nielsen and Gustav Vigeland . The farm building is connected to the main building via a gallery, which was originally used as a warehouse and temporarily housed part of the city museum. Today you can find the Vest Agder Museum in Andorsengården.

In front of Andorsengården lies the Andorsenhagen (Andorsengarten) on the side facing the Mandalselva river . It contains a shielded flower garden laid out in an old pattern. Until the redesign of Bryggegata in the 1960s, the property extended to the Mandalselva .
