fauna
The original salmon population was wiped out as a result of the acidification of the river system . But an extensive addition of lime has led to better environmental conditions in the river, so that new salmon stocks could be built up.
Salmon and sea trout can swim up the river to Kavfossen north of Bjelland - a river stretch of 48 km. Salmon can also hike a little up the tributary Kosåna.
In 2006, 11.9 t of salmon and 675 kg of sea trout were caught in the Mandalselva. This is a new fishing record in recent times. The largest salmon weighed 13.9 kg. The river became the sixth best salmon water in Norway in 2006 after adding lime to the river in 1997.
