André Beauneveu (born: 1335/1340 in Valenciennes ; died: 1401/1403 in?) Was a sculptor , illuminator and builder in France in the late 14th century .

history

Beauneveu was first fully mentioned by name in a note from the city of Valenciennes from 1363, in which he was named as a consultant for the construction of a church. That city is also considered the origin and birthplace of the master. Whether Beauneveu is identical with the master “Andrieu le pointre”, who worked for Countess Yolande von Cassel in 1364, is disputed.

In 1364 he was called to Paris by Charles V to make several royal tombs for the Abbey of Saint-Denis . The four invoices clearly assigned to Beauneveu as workshop master Gisants of Charles V , Philip VI. and Johann II are still in the abbey church today. There is no source material for the following years. It was not until 1374, again active in Valenciennes, that Beauneveu was commissioned to build the tomb of Louis de Mal , Count of Flanders , in the Count's chapel built by him . Of the original sculpture cycle, which originally comprised many works of art, only the alabaster figure of St. Catherine still exists today .

From 1384/1386 Beauneveus service for Jean de Valois , Duke of Berry, can be proven. In 1388 he moved his residence to Bourges, his capital city . At the Duke's court, the master was given the role of «ymagier du duc», the leading artist. Beauneveu was given the artistic direction in furnishing the Mehun-sur-Yèvre castle and, until his death, the Sainte-Chapelle in Bourges. The famous "Psalter of Jean de Berry" was also commissioned by the Duke and is now kept in the French National Library in Paris . Again, there is no precise documentary evidence for Beauneveu's death date. However, for technical reasons, it should be set between the years 1400 and 1403.

As a sculptor, he further developed the Gothic drapery as a means of expression. His work is characterized by soft modeling and elegant flow of lines. He was thus significantly involved in the formation of the soft style . He gave the figures portraits and strong facial expressiveness, which already heralded the early Renaissance .
