André Berthomieu

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

André Émile Jean Berthomieu (born February 16, 1903 in Rouen , France , † April 10, 1960 in Vineuil-Saint-Firmin ) was a French film director and screenwriter .

Live and act

Berthomieu began his professional career as an accountant, but had always been interested in the show stage and also appeared as an amateur singer. In the second half of the 1920s he made contact with the film industry and began assisting several directors, including Julien Duvivier . Even in the silent film era, in 1928, he was able to present his first directorial work. In the following years, Berthomieu turned film on film - light-weight, artistically completely ambitious entertainment food that showed him to be an experienced craftsman. In 1946 he even published an essay in which he expressly spoke out against artistic and revolutionary tendencies in film. Berthomieu was considered an extremely hard-working cinema confectioner: In around three decades of his creative time, the Frenchman directed almost 70 films, for which he often wrote the script.

André Berthomieu remained almost unknown in Germany, as only three of his productions were shown in German post-war cinemas. Despite its limited reputation, a considerable number of (rather later) stars appeared in Berthomieu films, including Annabella , Raimu , Danielle Darrieux , Michel Simon , Jean-Louis Barrault , Jules Berry , Bourvil , Louis de Funès and the very young Brigitte Bardot . André Berthomieu also held functionary posts: he temporarily headed the Syndicat des techniciens and was head of the Association des Auteurs de films from 1945 to 1955.
