Raimu , born in Jules Auguste César Muraire (born December 18, 1883 in Toulon , † September 20, 1946 in Neuilly-sur-Seine ), was a French entertainer and film actor .

Life

He was born as Jules Auguste César Muraire in simple circumstances. He made his first public appearance at the age of 16. At that time he used the stage name "Raimut", which later became "Raimu". In this first appearance in the Casino of Toulon, he imitated Félix Mayol and Polin . He also performed in Marseille and North Africa before Mayol gave him his first appearance in Paris in 1908 . As a result, Raimu became known as an entertainer and stage actor. From 1912 he took on minor roles in silent films , including under Henri Desfontaines in L'homme nu (1913). After completing his military service, he came to the theater in 1915. The real breakthrough came in 1929, when Raimu had the role of César in Marcel Pagnol's theatrical trilogy Marius , Fanny and César at the Comédie-Française . He also played the imaginary sick and the tartuff in Molière's comedies.

In 1931 Pagnol produced Marius as a film in which Raimu also appeared; Fanny followed in 1932 and César in 1936 . In particular through the films of Pagnol he became one of the most important and internationally recognized actors in French film between 1930 and 1945 , including as a betrayed husband in The Baker's Wife (1938) and alongside Fernandel in La Fille du puisatier (1940). His films Game of Memory (1937) by Julien Duvivier , The Strange Mr. Victor (1937) by Jean Grémillon and Colonel Chabert (1943) by René Le Hénaff also became famous . The last film Raimu starred in was The Eternal Husband in 1946 . In the 1940s he turned back to the stage work and was again a member of the Comédie-Française in the 1944/45 season.

On March 11, 1946, Raimu was in a car accident, including broken legs. A few months later he had to undergo another operation as a result of a broken tibia in the accident. During the actually uncomplicated procedure at the American Hospital in Paris , Raimu died of a heart attack at the age of 62 , probably due to an allergic reaction to an anesthetic. Thousands of people attended the funeral in the Saint-Philippe-du-Roule church in Paris. Raimu was buried on the Cimetière central of his hometown of Toulon.

In 1948 Antoine Toé's documentary La vie de Raimu was released , which describes the actor's life and is commented on by Marcel Pagnol.

Raimu's grave in Toulon

There is a plaque on Raimu's birthplace in Toulon and the Place Raimu in Toulon is named after the actor. Raimu is portrayed in several Asterix volumes: as host Cäsar Kneipix in Tour de France , as bar host of the “Sun of Massalia” in The Golden Sickle and as a guest at the celebration of the anniversary of the Battle of Gergovia in Asterix on Corsica . In the French version of Asterix and the copper cauldron , a Julesraimus appears, but apart from the name, it bears no resemblance to Raimu.
