André Bloch (composer)
André Bloch (born January 14, 1873 in Weißenburg , Reichsland Alsace-Lorraine , † August 7, 1960 in Paris ) was an Alsatian composer.
Life
André Bloch studied at the Paris Conservatory with Ernest Guiraud and Jules Massenet . In 1893 he won the first Premier Grand Prix de Rome with the cantata Antigone based on a text by Ferdinand Beissier . After the stay in the Villa Medici (Rome) associated with the award , he taught harmony at the Conservatoire de Paris from 1898, where his most important student was Jehan Alain . He later taught at the American Conservatory in Fontainebleau. The composer Fernand Oubradous was one of his private students . Bloch was best known as an opera composer. His first opera Maïda was premiered in 1909, his last comic opera Guignol , written in 1939, was premiered in 1949 at the Opéra-Comique . Bloch created part of the instrumentation for a performance of Offenbach's unfinished Hoffmann stories . He also composed symphonic works and ballets, chamber music, piano works and songs.
