André Gayot

André Emile Jean Gayot (born October 3, 1929 in Muaskar , Algeria ; † October 5, 2019 in Paris , France ) was a French-born gastronomy critic who published the "Gayot Guides" in the USA .

Life

Around 1972 he coined the term nouvelle cuisine with his friends Henri Gault (1929–2000) and Christian Millau (1928–2017) . In 1981 he began publishing a number of travel guides in the United States as "Gayot Guides", where restaurants are rated on a 20-point scale. His son Alain and daughter Sophie also work for the guide.

Gayot Guide

The Gayot Guide focuses on the top 40 restaurants. It is seen as an alternative to the Michelin Guide , which has been criticized for its questionable assessments of restaurants in New York City . Furnishing, service, ambience and wine list are commented on in each contribution, but have no influence on the overall rating of the restaurant. Every year, Gayot publishes its list of the Top 40 Restaurants in the United States, a guide to the best restaurants in the country.

In 2002 the gayot.com website was added, with over 20,000 reviews for restaurants and hotels.

Awards

  • 2005 Officer of the Legion of Honor for André Gayot (France's highest civilian honor)
