André Joseph Panckoucke (born January 31, 1703 in Lille , † January 19, 1753 in Lille) was a French writer and bookseller .

Life

André Joseph Panckoucke was the son of Pierre Panckoucke and Marie Angélique Hennion. At first he worked as a haberdashery and founded a bookshop in his hometown around 1730. He had a good education and was not satisfied with selling books, but wrote quite a few himself. On February 12, 1730 he married Marie-Marguerite Gandouin, daughter of the Parisian scholar and bookseller Pierre Gandouin. The writer and publisher Charles-Joseph Panckoucke (* 1736; † 1798) and the author and Salonnière Amélie Suard (* 1750; † 1830), wife of the journalist and writer Jean Baptiste Antoine Suard , emerged from this marriage.

Panckoucke, who admired Voltaire and was in correspondence with Voltaire for some time, died in Lille in 1753 at the age of 50. He was a Jansenist and a writer so liberal that his confessor refused to give him the sacraments of death and refused to allow him to be buried properly. The intervention of the Bishop of Tournai was necessary to make his burial possible.
