André Wagner (* 1980 in Burgstädt ) is a German photographer and visual artist . He has lived in Berlin since 2003.

Life

André Wagner, born 1980 in Burgstädt , Saxony , started his artistic work early. In addition to photographic works, which were shown at the German Youth Photo Prize in Berlin's Martin Gropius Bau in 2000, some large-format graffiti works were created during his school days, among others together with his classmate at the time, the painter Lars Teichmann . Further orders in the field of graffiti art followed.

André Wagner came to photography through graffiti art and street art . Between 1999 and 2001 he trained as a photographer and has been working as a freelance photographer since 2002. During these years he mainly worked for magazines such as “ Stern ”, “ Rolling Stone ” or “ Geo ”, and portrayed artists, musicians and athletes. Then he turned to freelance projects as a photo artist. In the following years he took part in many solo and group exhibitions in renowned art galleries, museums and art associations and exhibited at art fairs in Germany and abroad.

In 2013 he took part in the 55th Venice Biennale at Palazzo Bembo. Also in 2013 André Wagner had two solo exhibitions at the “Kunst Zürich” where he was nominated for the Zurich “Advancement Art Award”. In 2014 he was invited by the “Photokina” to show selected works from his monograph “Visions Of Time” in a large solo exhibition. In 2017 André Wagner is showing two museum exhibitions in the Museum Modern Art Altes Gaswerk Hünfeld and in the Kunstmuseum Moritzburg Halle (Saale) Art Museum of the State of Saxony-Anhalt, where a retrospective cross-section of his work can be seen. In addition, André Wagner realized several art in architecture projects on invitation , such as in 2013 in Zurich in the Surgery and Hand Surgery FMH - or a large, multi-part installation for Mobimo Management in the ensemble “Am Pfingstweidpark”, also in Zurich. For the Boston Consulting Group in Düsseldorf he installed a 10 by 5 meter work.

His special interest in the elements fire, wind, water and earth was already evident in his early work . At the beginning of his career as a photo artist, he created his so-called “fire drawings”: photographs that show the traces of burning torches in the night. These landscapes were created in Spain, New Zealand or Germany and India such as “Celtic Spell” (2004), “Torchlight” (2006) or “Treptower Park” (2003). Long exposure times are typical of his work. While at the beginning of his work it was the landscapes untouched by humans, Wagner also shows people in his pictures in later groups of works. In the “Time Flies” series (from 2011) he photographs people in large cities with blurred motion. Wagner has also found his subjects and images in India since 2004, as his third photo book "Reflections Of India", published in 2012, shows. Here, too, it is people's search for spirituality that interests the artist. In India he photographs temples, pilgrims, holy places and ceremonies, but also magical everyday scenes.

In more recent groups of works, too, André Wagner often remains true to the technique of motion blur. For example, he shows everyday scenes in which passers-by are blurred while the surroundings remain sharp. New works created again in India present individual pilgrims or groups of pilgrims on their nocturnal hikes or in the context of an impressive temple architecture. Examples of these works are the large-format photographs “Pilgrims At Govardhan” (2014), “Pilgrim Family” (2011) or “Coming Back From Yamuna River” (2011). The work “Radha Raman Temple” (2014) captures the intensely colored pigment throw during the famous Indian Holi color festival .
