Andrea Begley (* 1986 in Pomeroy , County Tyrone ) is a Northern Irish pop singer who became known as the 2013 winner of The Voice UK .

Career

Andrea Begley's aunt is the country singer Philomena Begley, who was particularly successful in the 1970s. She emulated her and, in her youth, regularly took part in Fleadhs, a special form of Irish singing competitions. In 2013, she applied for the second season of the talent show The Voice in the UK. With her performance of Sarah McLachlan's song Angel , she made it into the team of Irish coach Daniel O'Donoghue . With the folk rock song Ho Hey by the Lumineers , she made her way into the circle of favorites, her version also hit the UK charts .

Although she is visually impaired and has limited mobility on stage with a 10% vision, she reached the finals and won the season with, among other things, another performance of Angel and My Immortal by Evanescence . With the latter song she came in at number 30 in the single charts.

After the competition, there was a dissatisfaction because coach Will.i.am announced his lack of understanding about the audience voting and the defeat of his candidate Leah McFall via Twitter . After a discussion, Begley quit her government job, moved to London and recorded her debut album. Four months after the finale, The Message was released and entered the charts at number 7. This made her the most successful participant in the first five The Voice seasons. Despite an ongoing record deal with Capitol Records , she did not release an album thereafter.

She is the ambassador for the Royal National Institute of Blind People in Northern Ireland .
