Andrea Cirrincione

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Andrea Cirrincione (* 1607 in Palermo , † 1683 ibid) was an Italian Baroque architect and Dominican priest in Sicily .

Life

Cirrincione studied theology, mathematics and architecture. After joining the Dominicans in Palermo , he was entrusted by his order in 1639 with the construction of the old order church, built in 1458. He directed the construction work from the laying of the foundation stone on January 25, 1640 until his death. The result was a three-aisled interior divided by 16 columns in the form of a Latin cross with a size of 88.92 × 34.68 m, making it the largest church in Sicily. In 1678 he began building the Santa Maria della Pietà , which was not completed until 1689, after his death, and then rebuilt by Giacomo Amato in the late Baroque style until 1723. There is evidence that he also built secular buildings, so in 1673 he took over the construction management for the Villa San Marco in Bagheria . One of his students was the architect Tommaso Napoli , the builder of the Villa Palagonia .
