Andrea Gessl-Ranftl (born November 16, 1964 in Leoben ) is an Austrian politician ( SPÖ ). From 2008 to 2017 she was a member of the Austrian National Council .

education and profession

Andrea Gessl-Ranftl attended elementary school in Trofaiach from 1971 to 1975 and then for eight years the Bundesrealgymnasium in Leoben, where she passed the Matura in 1983 . From 1983 to 1986 Gessl-Ranftl graduated from the Pedagogical Academy in Graz and completed the course as a secondary school teacher in the subjects of German and biology and as a teacher at the polytechnic school. In the 1988/1989 school year she worked in the afternoon care department at the Leoben grammar school and then worked for nine years as a teacher in the Josefinum daycare center. For many years she also worked as a childcare worker and then as a behavioral support teacher in the Leoben district. Her field of activity included students with special educational needs and impairments in the social, but also emotional area. From September 2017 she works as a counseling teacher.

Political career

Andrea Gessl-Ranftl began her political career in January 2004 as the SP women chairwoman of Trofaiach, since September 2004 she has also been deputy SP city party chairwoman and since November 2004 a member of the Styrian women's executive committee. On April 7, 2005, the politician was appointed to the Trofaiach city council, where she resigned from this position on October 26, 2005. On October 25, 2005 Andrea Gessl-Ranftl was sworn in as a member of the Styrian state parliament . From 2006 to 2008 she held the office as deputy Leoben SP district women chairwoman, from 2008 to 2014 she took over the chairmanship. From 2014 to May 2017 she headed the Leoben-Eisenerz Regional Women.

For the National Council election in 2008 she was unanimously nominated by the delegates of the Leoben district as the district 's top SPÖ candidate. In the election itself, she was able to gain a mandate in the Upper Styrian regional constituency and was therefore sworn in on October 28, 2008 in the constituent session of the National Council of the XXIV legislative period . In the legislative period up to 2013 she was a member of the following committees: Immunity Committee, Subcommittee of the Education Committee, Court of Audit Committee, Committee for Human Rights, Equal Treatment Committee, National Defense Committee, Environment Committee and Education Committee.

In the 2013 National Council election , Gessl-Ranftl was again able to obtain a basic mandate in the Upper Styria regional constituency . It is therefore also in the National Council of the XXV. Legislative period represented as a deputy and in this member of the standing subcommittee of the national defense committee, the national defense committee, the committee for human rights, the audit committee, the teaching committee, the committee for consumer protection as well as the tourism committee. Until 2014 she was also the deputy chairman of the immunity committee. Since February 2015 she has been a member of the Parliamentary Federal Armed Forces Commission.
