Andrea Scherney (born August 26, 1966 in Vienna ) is a former Austrian athlete and three-time gold medalist at the Paralympics (1996, 2004, 2008).

Life

She is the sports director of the Austrian Disabled Sports Association and lecturer at the Sports University Vienna and the Sports Academy Vienna. After gold medals at the 1996 Summer Paralympics in Atlanta in the javelin throw and in 2004 in Athens in the long jump , she succeeded again in 2008 to win a gold medal. With a jump of 4.82 m, she won the class for lower leg amputees.

The amputation below her left knee became necessary when she was in a motorcycle accident at the age of 20. At that time, she was already studying sport, but only lost one semester due to her disability. After overcoming a few bureaucratic hurdles, she was Austria's first disabled sports student.

The athlete, who was married in 2007, ended her sporting career after the 2008 Paralympics in Beijing . Today she works as a sports director at the Austrian Disabled Sports Association.

Andrea Scherney lives in Gars am Kamp , where a street is named after her.
