Fack spent his childhood and youth in Merkers. He attended elementary school in Merkers, where his musical talents were noticed early on. The parents were not wealthy, but they made it possible for Andreas to attend the teachers' seminar in Eisenach . From 1885 to 1924 Fack worked as a teacher in the small Rhön town of Kaltennordheim , where he also died. Fack found his final resting place in the place of his birth. The nature-loving Fack remained unmarried, but he was not a loner. In addition to hiking, his favorite pastimes in his free time were fruit growing and working in the school garden. He also dealt with the handicraft techniques and imparted his knowledge in the context of the handicraft lessons, which he introduced into the timetable.

Origin of the Rhön song

Fack was the poet and composer of the famous Rhön song "Zur Rhön up".

As a teacher he always had the opportunity to develop his musical talent by composing and changing children's songs. In the summer of 1912, Fack recited the verses of his newly written Rhön song to his friends and regulars at the "Hotel zum Hirsch" in Kaltennordheim. They were enthusiastic and immediately set to music. The new Rhönlied was drunk with Kaltennordheimer beer. The next morning, however, the piano player had "lost" the melody because of the alcohol consumption, which was then put together again the following evening with the help of Andreas Fack. Further Rhön songs (e.g. "Fresh up to the dear Rhön up ...") were later submitted by Fack, but had not reached the level of awareness.

Honors

  • The city of Kaltennordheim donated a grave memorial, it is located in the cemetery at Kilian's Church. A simple wooden cross was erected in the Merkers cemetery.
  • A school in Kaltennordheim is named after him and the local museum of local history dedicates its own room to him. There its importance for both the city and the entire Rhön is shown.
  • His former apartment in Kaltennordheim on Bebelstrasse is indicated by a sign.
  • The house where he was born in Merkers, which is under monument protection, has been refurbished as the "Andreas-Fack-Haus" home parlor for the local jubilee. In the meantime, serious damage to the building has been determined by experts, so a longer period of closure is to be feared.
