Andreas Schopenhauer

Andreas Schopenhauer (born June 11, 1720 , † December 23, 1793 in Danzig , West Prussia , Kingdom of Prussia ) was a German merchant in Danzig and the grandfather of the philosopher Arthur Schopenhauer .

The Schop (p) enhauer family are attested as farmers in the area of ​​Gdansk since the 15th century. Andreas' father Johann Schopenhauer (1670–1724 / 25) was the first mentioned merchant in the family and tenant of the Stutthof estate. The mother was Marie Elisabeth Lessig.

Andreas Schopenhauer trained as a businessman and in 1741 received his father's inheritance when he came of age, plus the share of his late brother Leo. In 1744 he founded a trading company with Hendrik Soermans (Johann Heinrich Soermann), who was the resident (representative) of the Netherlands in the Hanseatic city of Danzig. This exported wood products to France (Dunkirk, Bordeaux), also to the Netherlands (Amsterdam) and England and imported wine and salt. There were also trade contacts with the Tsar's court in St. Petersburg. Since 1750 Schopenhauer ran the company alone. He owned a corn flour factory in Ohra and an ash stall in Nova Scotia , several buildings in Gdansk, including the family home at 114 Heilige-Geist-Straße (today ul. Św. Ducha 47, the birthplace of Arthur Schopenhauer) and the former home of the Abbots of Oliva, also an estate in Ohra with half the boundary of the place.

Andreas Schopenhauer also did financial transactions, he worked as a banker and helped the city of Danzig in difficult times. There are documents about a conviction for unauthorized extensive trade in the Tympf silver coin . Schopenhauer also appeared as a benefactor and was a member of the board of the children's orphanage from 1746 to 1780.

Andreas Schopenhauer had numerous paintings in his house, the painters of which are not known. He was the wealthiest member of the Schopenhauer family and created a property from which subsequent generations could live.

Andreas Schopenhauer was married to Anna Renata Soermans, the daughter of his business partner Hendrik Soermans. They had 15 children, including

He was buried in the family grave at the church in Ogra.
