Andrei Lvovich Kursanov

Andrei Lwowitsch Kursanow , Russian Андрей Львович Курсанов , English transcription Andrey Kursanov, (born November 8, 1902 in Moscow ; † September 20, 1999 ibid) was a Russian botanist (plant physiology) and biochemist.

Kursanow graduated from Lomonosov University in 1926. From 1935 to 1953 he headed the enzyme laboratory at the Institute of Biochemistry of the Soviet Academy of Sciences . In 1940 he completed his habilitation (Russian doctorate) and in 1944 he became a professor at Lomonosov University. From 1952 to 1988 he headed the Institute of Plant Physiology (Timirjasew Institute) of the Soviet Academy of Sciences. 1984 to 1988 he headed the plant physiology department at Lomonossow University.

He investigated the transport of nutrients in the plant both into the cell and between cells as well as over longer distances and the role of enzymes in plant cells. He studied the uptake of nitrogen, phosphorus and potassium in root cells. With Alexander Oparin , he studied tannins in tea and other plants, and with Mikhail Saprometov he found that catechins in tea strengthen the walls of blood vessels.

He was an honorary member of the German Botanical Society (DBG). He was a member of the Russian Academy of Sciences (corresponding member 1946, full member 1953), and from 1957 to 1963 in its Presidium, member of the Polish Academy of Sciences and the American Academy of Arts and Sciences (1962). He was awarded the Order of Lenin four times , was a Hero of Socialist Labor (1969), twice received the Order of the Red Labor Banner , in 1982 the Order of the October Revolution and in 1983 received the Lomonosov Gold Medal . He was multiple honorary doctorates. In 1985 he became a member of the Academy of Agricultural Sciences. In 1955 he became a member of the Leopoldina .

In 1952 he founded the journal Fisiologija rastenii (Plant Physiology) and was its editor for a long time.
