Andrei Oişteanu

Andrei Oişteanu (born September 18, 1948 in Bucharest ) is a Romanian religious historian , cultural scientist and journalist .

Life

The son of a Jewish family was born in Bucharest in 1948 and studied humanities with a focus on ethnology .

His first books were devoted to Romanian folklore and folk mythology . After the reunification, further study and research stays in Hungary, Israel and Germany followed.

In 2001 he received his doctorate with a thesis on the image of Jews in traditional Romanian culture. This work later evolved into a comprehensive study that was translated into several languages.

Today Andrei Oişteanu is a lecturer at the Center for Jewish Studies at the University of Bucharest and a member of the Romanian Academy , where he heads the Department of History of Religions. He deals with the topic of Romanian anti-Semitism and with the prehistory of the Romanian Holocaust. In his country, Oisteanu has been one of the most important intellectuals and publicists since the 1990s.
