Andrei Ryabov
Andrej Wladimirowitsch Rjabow ( Russian Андрей Владимирович Рябов ; born July 24, 1962 in Leningrad ) is a Russian jazz musician (guitar). In the West, the English spelling of his name Andrei Ryabov is common.
Live and act
Ryabov learned to play classical guitar from the age of eleven in his native town; a few years later, influenced by Wes Montgomery , Jim Hall and Bill Evans , he was drawn to jazz. After graduating from the Leningrad Musorgsky Conservatory in 1982, he joined the Leningrad Jazz Ensemble led by Dawid Goloschtschokin , one of the best jazz groups in the Soviet Union ; until 1988 he was a member of this band, with whom he recorded two albums and went on tour. In the same year he released his first album under his own name on the Melodija label together with the Estonian guitarist Tiit Paulus .
In 1989, Ryabov became a faculty member at the Musorgsky Conservatory, where he gave master classes and workshops across the country. In 1989 he formed his first band, which performed in the USSR, Europe and South America. During a tour of Richie Cole through the Soviet Union, Rjabov recorded an album with him in 1989. In the annual critics poll of the Soviet Jazz Federation, Ryabov was voted the best jazz guitarist in Russia from 1989 to 1992; the quartet, led jointly with the pianist Andrei Kondakow , was named the best jazz ensemble in 1992.
In the same year Ryabov moved to the United States at the invitation of the Signature Sounds label and settled in Massachusetts, where he performed at festivals, colleges and clubs. He participated in the Bright Moments Jazz Festival , opened concerts for the Trio of Al Di Meola and appeared in a series of concerts with Attila Zoller at the Vermont Jazz Center as well as on radio and television. He has also played with musicians such as Dave Brubeck , Joe Pass and Gene Bertoncini .
His CD Day Dream was released in 1993 in the USA. In the same year Ryabov moved to New York City, where he appeared both as a leader and as a sideman, for example with Richie Cole's Alto Madness Orchestra , and where he found a place in the New York jazz scene. In 1996 he took part in the tribute concert for Tal Farlow in the Merkin Concert Hall . In 2004 he performed with the Yellowjackets . In 2008 Ryabov returned to St. Petersburg .
