Andrei Kovachev (also spelled Andrey Kovachev , Bulgarian Андрей Ковачев ; born December 13, 1967 in Sofia ) is a Bulgarian politician , member of the European Parliament for the GERB party and one of the deputy group leaders of the European People's Party .

education

Andrej Kowatschew has a master's degree in biology from Saarland University . He also received a PhD in biology from the same university. In addition to his native Bulgarian, he is fluent in German, English, French, Spanish and Russian.

Party career and membership in parliament

Since 2007, Kowachev has been deputy chairman of the Working Group on Foreign and European Affairs of his political party GERB. He has been a member of the European Parliament since the 2009 European elections.

He is head of the Bulgarian delegation to the European People's Party (EPP). Since 2017 he has been Deputy Chairman of the EPP Group and a member of the EPP Executive Board.

From 2012 to 2014 he was Deputy Chairman of the Committee on Foreign Affairs in the European Parliament. Since the 2014 European elections, Kowachev has been a member of the Presidium of the European Parliament, the Committee on Foreign Affairs , the Subcommittee on Human Rights (DROI) and the Delegation for Relations with the United States (D-US). He is also a deputy member of the Committee on Environment, Public Health and Food Safety (ENVI) and the delegation to the EU-Former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia Joint Parliamentary Committee (D-MK).

As Quaestor in the European Parliament, he also has numerous responsibilities in the internal administration of the institution.

Other engagement

Since 2011, Kowachev has been Deputy Chairman of the Union of European Federalists . In addition, he holds the chairmanship of the European Union Bulgaria.

In the European Parliament he is a member of the cross-party Spinelli group, which advocates a European federalism.

As a member of parliament, he is actively committed to the EU's eastward expansion and, in particular, to the European integration of the Western Balkans.
