Andres Anvelt (born September 30, 1969 in Tallinn , Estonian SSR ) is an Estonian politician. He was Minister of the Interior of the Republic of Estonia from November 23, 2016 to November 26, 2018. Anvelt is a member of the Estonian Social Democratic Party (SDE).

Life, law and politics

Andres Anvelt graduated from high school in Tallinn in 1987. He then attended a special militia school for basic legal training . Anvelt had been employed by the Tallinn Police Department since 1989.

Anvelt studied law at the University of Tartu until 2000 , then public administration at the Tallinn University of Technology . There he passed his master's degree in 2003. He also completed numerous courses at the FBI Academy in Virginia .

From 2001 to 2003 he was director of the Estonian criminal police. From 2004 to 2006 he headed the Estonian Police Training Center ( Politseikolledž ).

From 2007 to 2011, Anvelt was Security Advisor to the Commander of the Estonian Armed Forces , Ants Laaneots .

From 2011 to 2014, Anvelt was a member of the Estonian Parliament ( Riigikogu ). In 2013 he ran unsuccessfully for the Social Democrats for the office of Lord Mayor of the capital Tallinn . From March 26, 2014 to April 9, 2015, he was Estonian Minister of Justice in the social-liberal coalition government of Prime Minister Taavi Rõivas .

After leaving the cabinet, Anvelt returned to parliament. There he became chairman of the Social Democrats. From November 23, 2016, Andres Anvelt was Minister of the Interior in Prime Minister Jüri Ratas' cabinet . He held this post until his resignation for health reasons in November 2018.

In addition to his professional activity, Anvelt has also appeared as a writer. In December 2007 his detective novel Punane elavhõbe ("The red quicksilver") was published. It was filmed in 2010 by the Estonian director Andres Puustusmaa . Anvelt's second novel, Director , was published in November 2010 . Ühe turu erastamise lugu ("The director. The story of the privatization of a market"). It circles around the Tallinn central market in the late 1990s.

Private life

Andres Anvelt's grandfather, Jaan Anvelt (1884–1937), was one of the most famous Bolshevik agitators in Estonia. With the help of the Soviet Russian army in 1918/1919 he established a communist reign of terror in northeast Estonia and was largely responsible for the failed communist attempted coup in Estonia in 1924. In 1937 he fell victim to the Great Terror in Moscow .

Andres Anvelt's father, who came from the second marriage of his grandfather Jaan Anvelt to the Estonian painter and member of parliament Alise Stein-Anvelt (née Lewald, 1900-1991), was the Soviet functionary Jaan Anvelt (the younger, 1936-2001).

Andres Anvelt is married to the Estonian journalist Kärt Anvelt.
