Ants Laaneots
Ants Laaneots (born January 16, 1948 ) is a former Estonian general . He was Commander of the Estonian Armed Forces from 2006 to 2011 and then (until 2014) advisor to Prime Minister Andrus Ansip . He has been a member of the Estonian Parliament since 2015 .
Life
Ants Laaneots was born in Kilingi-Nõmme , a town in the southwest of what was then the Estonian Soviet Socialist Republic . In 1949 his family was deported to Siberia, where his mother died in 1952. In 1958 he was allowed to return to Estonia with his uncle and aunt. Until he graduated from school in 1965, Laaneots attended the grammar school in his hometown.

In 1966 he joined the Soviet Army . After completing his officer training in Kharkov , he worked from 1970 in various positions in the tank troops at home and abroad.
After Estonia regained its independence, Laaneots joined the re-established armed forces of his homeland in 1991. There he worked in various management positions over the next few years and attended several military schools in western countries for further training. In 1998 he was promoted to major general. From 2001 to 2006 he was the commander of the Estonian Military Academy. After this activity, he was appointed military commander of the Estonian armed forces as the successor to Tarmo Kõuts . In this position he was promoted to lieutenant general in 2008 and general in 2011.
Activity in politics
At the end of his five-year term, Laaneots became Prime Minister Andrus Ansip's advisor on national defense issues. This activity ended with Ansip's resignation in 2014.
In the 2015 parliamentary election , he ran as a candidate for the Reform Party , which he joined in 2014, and managed to garner almost 6,000 votes. Since then he has been a member of the Estonian Parliament ( Riigikogu ) for this party . In the next election in 2019 , however, he was only able to gain a good 3,000 votes.
Private
Ants Laaneots is married and has two adult children (a son and a daughter). In addition to his mother tongue, he is fluent in English and Russian.
