Tarmo Kõuts

Tarmo Kõuts (born November 27, 1953 in Pihtla , Saaremaa ) is an Estonian politician and officer. From 2000 to 2006 he was in command of the Estonian Armed Forces .

Life

Tarmo Kõuts was born in Pihtla, on the island of Saaremaa (then in the Estonian Soviet Socialist Republic, which was part of the Soviet Union ). After school (1961–1969) and vocational training (1969–1973), he began working as a seaman in 1973. While working for a company from his home country, he attended a naval school in Kaliningrad from 1978 to 1985 , where he was trained as a nautical officer .

After working as an officer and captain for the next few years, he was director of the Estonian Naval Academy in Tallinn from 1990 to 1993 . He then moved to the border troops of Estonia, which had regained its independence, and was their director until 2000. On September 21, 2000 he was appointed military commander of the armed forces. Two years later, Kõuts was promoted to Vice Admiral ( Estonian : viitseadmiral).

In 2006, he ended his military career, moved into politics and was in 2007 as a representative of the so Isamaa Res Publica Liit (IRL) in the Estonian Parliament ( Riigikogu selected). When the candidates were nominated for the 2011 election , he was no longer considered by the IRL and left parliament after only one legislative period.

Tarmo Kõuts is married and has one adult son. In addition to his mother tongue, he also speaks Russian, English, German and Finnish. His personal interests include fishing, hunting, and sailing.
