Carmina Virgili
Carmina Virgili i Rodón (born June 19, 1927 in Barcelona ; † November 21, 2014 there ) was a Spanish (Catalan) geologist .
Life
Her father was a senior civil servant in Catalonia, her mother Carme Rodón was a professor of pharmacy. Carmina Virgili studied natural sciences in Barcelona with a degree in 1949 and received her doctorate in geology in 1959. In 1958 she became assistant professor at the chair of Felip Solé i Sabarís, 1963 professor in Oviedo and 1968 professor in Madrid, at what is now the University of Complutense Madrid . From 1968 to 1981 she was also director of the Applied Geology Department (Geologia Econòmica) of the CSIC. From 1977 to 1980 she was dean of the Faculty of Geology in Madrid.
She worked closely with French scientists and was visiting professor in Strasbourg in 1972/73 and 1974. From 1987 to 1996 she was director of the Collège d'Espagne at the Cité Internationale Universitaire de Paris .
She dealt in particular with palaeogeography and stratigraphy of the Triassic in Spain, but also with Permian and Jurassic . From 1976 to 1980 she headed the working group for the Mesozoic Era in Spain and she was a founding member of the Spanish working group on sedimentology.
She was the third woman to be a university professor in Spain and the first in geology. From 1996 to 2000 she was Senator of the Province of Catalonia for the Catalan Socialist Party ( Partit dels Socialistes de Catalunya , PSC).
From 1982 to 1985 she was State Secretary for Universities and Research under Felipe González and from 1982 to 1996 in the Spanish Commission for UNESCO. From 1977 to 1987 she headed the Fundació Pablo Iglesias.
