Andrew Fabian

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Andrew Christopher Fabian (born February 20, 1948 ) is a British astronomer and astrophysicist.

Fabian heads the X-ray astronomy group at the Institute of Astronomy at Cambridge University . His current research focuses on galaxy clusters , active galaxy nuclei and black holes, and the cosmic X-ray background. Before that, Fabian also dealt with X-ray binary stars , neutron stars and supernova remnants .

He is one of the discoverers of widely broadened iron emission lines from the immediate vicinity of black holes in active galaxy nuclei. He is one of the most important proponents of the idea that parts of the hot gas in galaxy clusters must cool down rapidly in cooling flows , and he investigates the role of active galaxy nuclei as energy sources for the observed suppression of this process.
