Andrew Melville , Latin Melvinus (born August 1, 1545 in Baldowie , Angus , † 1622 in Sedan ) was a Scottish theologian and religious leader.

Life

After Melville had studied in France and taught at the Geneva Academy in 1568 , he returned to Scotland after six years ; and was there in 1574 rector of the University of Glasgow and St. Mary College of the University of St Andrews (1580). As a moderator of the General Assembly ( Synod ) of the Church of Scotland, he had arguments with the Scottish King James VI. and had to leave Scotland in 1584. Melville returned in 1585, regained his post, and became rector of the University of St. Andrews in 1590. In 1606 he was called to London to discuss the Scottish Church , where he was arrested and imprisoned in the Tower of London for four years for his sharp attack on the Church of England . He was responsible for many reforms to consolidate Scottish Presbyterianism and died in France as a professor of theology in Sedan .
