Andrew Schultz

Andrew Schultz (born August 18, 1960 in Adelaide ) is an Australian composer of contemporary classical music and music professor.

Life

Schultz 'education took place at the Universities of Queensland and Pennsylvania and at King's College in London . He holds a Bachelor of Music with Honors ( Bachelor with Honor ), a Master of Music degree and a Ph.D. in composition .

He has lived in Sydney since 2008 , where he is Professor of Music at the University of New South Wales there . Previous academic positions were in the United Kingdom , France, the United States and Canada.

Works

His compositions cover a wide spectrum with chamber music as well as orchestral and vocal works. He has also been commissioned many times by leading Australian orchestras .

The following operas should be mentioned among Schultze's works:

  • Black River (1989),
  • Going into Shadows (2001),
  • The Children's Bach (2008) - these were adapted and used as film music in Black River (a 1993 film).

Other extensive compositions are:

  • Violin Concerto (1996),
  • Journey to Horseshoe Bend (2003),
  • Song of Songs (2004),
  • The Endling (2006),
  • To the evening star (2009).

Journey to Horseshoe Bend and Black River deal with the socio-cultural issue of the conflicts between Australian natives and Western settlers and for this reason are also cast with actors of indigenous origin when performing on stage.
