Andrianampoinimerina (* approx. 1745 , † 1810 ) was the founder of the Kingdom of Madagascar and king of the island .

Andrianampoinimerina, a member of the Merina dynasty and son of Andriamiaramanjakas , succeeded him in 1787 on the throne of the small kingdom of Ambohimanga (royal seat 20 km north of Antananarivo ). In 1794 he conquered the neighboring kingdom of Antananarivo and moved his official residence from Ambohimanga to Antananarivo.

Gradually, Andrianampoinimerina expanded its sphere of influence to almost the entire island and thus founded the Merina Kingdom of Madagascar. He enacted many laws, including a criminal code , land reforms, and trade regulations, and organized the country's administration, and is still considered a major ruler of the country to this day.

Under his rule, the orally transmitted stories of the Merina began to be written down (" Tantaran'ny Andriana ").

His name translates as " Prince in the heart of the Merina ", his successor was Radama I.
