Ranavalona II.
Ranavalona II. ( 1829 - 13 July 1883 ) was ruler of the Kingdom of Madagascar from 1868 to 1883 .
She succeeded her cousin Rasoherina to the throne and was a widow of Radama II. Ranavalona had married Prime Minister Rainilaiarivony , who, like her predecessor, directed the fate of the country from the background as a gray eminence.
Before her accession to the throne in 1868, Ranavalona converted to Christianity and made Protestantism the state religion . Her reign is marked by the rapid westernization of the island kingdom, accompanied by close cooperation with British missionaries , economic growth , the building of schools and the beginning of the first codification of law, but also the emergence of conflicts with the colonial power France .
