Elizabeth Catlett (also Elizabeth Catlett Mora ; born April 15, 1915 in Washington, DC , † April 2, 2012 in Cuernavaca , Mexico ) was an American - Mexican artist.

biography

Catlett studied until 1936 at Howard University in Washington, DC, where he obtained a " Bachelor of Arts " degree . She then studied at the University of Iowa , where she graduated in 1940 with a Master of Arts degree. She then studied ceramics at the Art Institute of Chicago . She also studied lithography at the Art Students League and sculpture with Ossip Zadkine , both in New York . She later taught sculpture at Prairie View College in Texas , Williard University in New Orleans, and the Hampton Institute in Virginia, and was a lecturer in ceramics at Jefferson School in New York . From 1929 she studied drawing and painting at the just from the Academia de San Carlos emerged Escuela Nacional de Artes Plásticas (ENAP) of the National Autonomous University of Mexico (UNAM). In 1949 she moved to Mexico and joined the Taller de Grafica Popular (Workshop of Folk Graphics, TGP). In 1962, Catlett was granted Mexican citizenship. She married Francisco Mora and had three children. From 1955 to 1966 she headed the ENAP College. From 1963 to 1965 she acted as Secretary General of Taller de Grafica Popular. She has received numerous international awards, including first prize at the American Negro Exhibition in Chicago and second prize for graphics at the University of Atlanta . A central theme of Catlett's work is Afro-American culture and identity. Catlett is an honorary doctorate from six universities. In 2002 she was elected a member ( NA ) of the National Academy of Design in New York .
