Ranavalona III.
Ranavalona III. (* November 22, 1861 in Amparibe ; † May 23, 1917 in Algiers , Algeria ) was the last ruler of the Kingdom of Madagascar and ruled from 1883 to 1897.
Life
On November 22nd, 1883 she was crowned queen as the successor to Ranavalonas II . During her reign the first war broke out with France , which ended with a marked weakening of her position. On December 12, 1887, she had to sign a contract that gave France a say.
In 1896 France attacked the island again and Madagascar became a French protectorate . Formally, Ranavalona III was. continue to be the ruler. That changed a year later: the French general Joseph Gallieni deposed the queen on February 28, 1897 and banished her into exile in Algeria.
Ranavalona III died on May 23, 1917. at the age of 55 in Algiers.
Burial places
In 1938 the remains of Ranavalonas III. transferred to Madagascar and buried in the royal tombs of the Rova of Antananarivo . On the night of November 6, 1995, a deliberate fire destroyed or damaged several buildings in the Rova. A female body was found in the city center. The next day there was a funeral service for the dead, later known as Ranavalona III. was identified. She found her final resting place on the royal hill Ambohimanga , the traditional burial place of the Malagasy kings that since 2001 the UNESCO - World Heritage matters.
