Andris Bērziņš (politician, 1951)
Andris Bērziņš (born August 4, 1951 in Riga ) is a Latvian politician of the Latvijas Ceļš party (Latvia's Way) and former Prime Minister .
Life
Minister and Mayor of Riga
After finishing school, he studied history and philosophy .
Bērziņš was appointed Minister of Labor in the cabinet of Valdis Birkavs on August 3, 1993 . He was then from September 15, 1994 to December 21, 1995 Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Welfare in the government of Māris Gailis . After all, he was a member of the Cabinet of Prime Minister Andris Šķēle as Minister of State for Labor in the Ministry of Welfare until February 13, 1997 .
In 1997 he was a candidate of the party Latvijas cels for mayor of Riga elected.
Prime Minister from 2000 to 2002
Subsequently, on May 5, 2000, he became Prime Minister himself, succeeding Šķēle . As such, he formed a coalition government of his party with the "People's Party" ( Tautas Partija ), the party "For Fatherland and Freedom" ( Tēvzemei un Brīvībai ) and the party "New Era" ( Jaunais Laiks ). He held the post of Prime Minister until his replacement by Einars Repše on November 7, 2002.
In the European elections on May 18, 2004, he ran unsuccessfully on the second list of the Latvijas Ceļš.
