Andy Cutting (born March 18, 1969 in Harrow / London , United Kingdom) is an English folk musician and composer. He plays the diatonic accordion and is known for composing and playing traditional English folk music as well as his own pieces. His compositions combine English and French traditions with other influences. He was three times the winner of the "Folk Musician of the Year Award at the BBC Radio 2 Folk Awards". He was involved in around 50 music albums, both as a solo artist and in collaboration with other musicians. He is married and has three children.

Life

Cutting began playing the diatonic accordion as a teenager. After a few months he was invited to play in a local Céilí band. In 1988 he joined the influential and innovative band Blowzabella. Cutting released an album (Vanilla) with Blowzabella before he left the band in 1990. Their repertoire, a mixture of traditional English and central French music, as well as music from Eastern Europe, had a great influence on Cutting. In 2003 Blowzabella celebrated its 25th anniversary. Cutting was there again as an official member. In 2007 they released the album "Octomento".

In 1989 Cutting partnered with Chris Wood, whom he had met two years earlier at the Sidmouth Festival. For several years the two toured extensively and created five music albums together. Wood introduced cutting to the richness of Quebec music. Both shared a love for English and French dance music. Wood and Cutting, along with Karen Tweed and Ian Carr, formed the "Two Duos Quartet". The result was the album " Half as happy as we" .

Tweed and Cutting also played as a duo. They released an album together and contributed to the live CD " Across the Waters" , which was recorded in 1994 at the University of Cork.

Cutting regularly works as a session musician with artists as diverse as Sting , June Tabor and Chumbawamba . He was a member of several bands. In addition to the Wood & Cutting Duo, he is a member of the Trio 1651 (with Mark Emerson and Tim Harries ), the John McCusker Band, the Kate Rusby Trio and the Kate Rusby Band. He is also a popular workshop tutor.

In March 2011 Cutting was involved in the Cecil Sharp Project, a joint commission of the Shrewsbury Folk Festival and EFDSS. He and seven other musicians took part in the week-long project to create new works for Cecil Sharp. Cecil Sharp was the founding father of the folk song revival in England.

Leveret's album " Inventions" was one of the top three albums of the year at The Arts Desk . Leveret has been described as a band creating remarkably new English instrumental music.

Cutting is also performing and recording with guitarist Martin Simpson and fiddle player Nancy Kerr . Her debut CD " Murmurs" was named one of the best folk albums of 2015 by The Telegraph . They have been described as three of Britain's finest musicians and performers of songs and melodies, each of them recognized virtuosos.

In 2015 Cutting founded the new Anglo-French band Topette.
