Andy Green

Andy Green (born July 30, 1962 ) is an RAF pilot with the rank of Wing Commander ( Lieutenant Colonel ) from the United Kingdom . He graduated from Worcester College at Oxford University . He holds the current world speed record for land vehicles and was the first person to break the sound barrier in a land vehicle officially recognized record attempt by the FIA .

On September 25, 1997, he reached a record speed of 1,149.30 km / h with the ThrustSSC in Black Rock Desert , United States . On October 15, 1997, he improved the record with the vehicle to 1,227.99 km / h, which corresponds to Mach  1.016 and thus supersonic speed .

On August 23, 2006, Green set another world speed record for vehicles with diesel engines : He reached 563.418 km / h with the JCB Dieselmax in Bonneville Salt Flats , Utah , although he only used around 800 kW of the available 1,100 kW power. The previous world speed record for diesel vehicles was from 1973.

Green is involved in the development of the Bloodhound SSC , which he test-driven on October 26, 2017 in England at speeds of up to 320 km / h and which should reach 1600 km / h in 2018.
