history

Chapel of St. Anne

According to tradition, a traveling salesman from Saxony crossed the Annaberg in 1716. On the way he saw children playing with a small statue of St. Anne. Saint Anne was mainly venerated by pilgrims. He bought them from them and donated them to the Church of the Visitation of the Virgin Mary in Lobendau. First, the statue was placed on a column. She was later brought to the mountain chapel on the Joachimsberg. From here the statue reached the Annaberg several times “miraculously”, which is why a baroque chapel was built there from 1775 to 1777, which was expanded in 1857. The Annaberg subsequently developed into a place of pilgrimage. In 1834 the place was completed by a Way of the Cross with 13 Stations of the Cross, the statue of Jesus Christ and a Holy Sepulcher Chapel were built. The remarkable sandstone figures in the Gethsemane Garden, built in 1840, were created by the sculptor Franz Pettrich , who was founded in Dresden in 1795 by Elector Friedrich August III. was appointed court sculptor.

On the feast of St. Anna on July 26th, the inhabitants of Lobendau and the neighboring villages celebrated a great pilgrimage to the mountain. Thousands of pilgrims from all over Bohemia, but also Catholic Sorbs from Saxony came here. The Annabergfest, which then lasted seven days, was popularly known as “Madlmorcht” (girls' market), as this was where young people had the opportunity to get to know each other and to look for a bride.

The tradition was abruptly ended after the German population was expelled, and the chapel and stations of the cross fell into disrepair. In the meantime, the chapel of St. Anne has been renovated, the way of the cross has been cleared of the overgrown vegetation. For some years now, another pilgrimage organized by the Lobendava parish has been taking place on July 26th.
