As Angostura or Angostura is called a cocktail bitters , in addition to gentian root and bitter orange , cloves , cardamom , cinnamon and quinine bark may contain. Angostura bark is not used in the original recipe, but it is used in copycat products . The bitter is used to flavor spirits and to make mixed drinks (for example the cocktails Old Fashioned or Manhattan ), but is also used to flavor desserts or for sauces for fish and meat.

Angostura was developed by the German doctor Johann Gottlieb Benjamin Siegert , who, at the request of the South American freedom fighter Simón Bolívar, set up a military hospital in the then Venezuelan city ​​of Angostura (now Ciudad Bolívar ) at the beginning of the 19th century . In 1824, he developed a high-percentage tonic to combat the tropical diseases prevailing there, but it did not make a career as a medicine, but as a condiment under the name Angostura. Siegert later left Bolívar's troops to market his invention. The Angostura Group or House of Angostura , based in Trinidad, is the legal successor of the company founded by Siegert in the 1850s. The production facilities are located in Laventille , in 2006 around 250 employees were involved in the production of the bitter. The company exports its bitter to more than 100 countries, today also sells a rum and has developed another bitter that is dominated by citrus fruits .

She points out that her bitters sold under the brand name Angostura Aromatic Bitters , which are supposedly still made according to Siegert's original recipe from 1824, do not contain any Angostura bark. The name is only derived from the name of the city in which Siegert made his invention. However, other manufacturers - sometimes also under the name Angostura bitter - sell bitters that contain Angostura bark as an additional component.

On the side of each bottle shows a medal with the face of Emperor Franz Joseph I , which the company won at the World Exhibition in Vienna in 1873 .

Angostura contains 44.7% alcohol by volume; Nevertheless, it was not banned in the USA during Prohibition because it is so bitter that it can only be used for flavoring ("strong bitter").
