Attack on Planned Parenthood in Colorado Springs 2015

The 2015 attack on Planned Parenthood in Colorado Springs was an armed attack by anti-abortion opponent Robert Lewis Dear against the office of Planned Parenthood Clinic in Colorado Springs on November 27, 2015. Dear shot three people, wounded nine others, and spent five hours in the process Police shooting up to his arrest.

Sequence of events

At 11:38 am, the Colorado Springs police station received an emergency call. The caller reported that there was a shooter outside the Planned Parenthood office on 3480 Centennial Boulevard. The attacker was wearing a long coat, first shot out of the rear window of his car and then holed up in the clinic. He later shot and killed University of Colorado Police Officer Garrett Swasey, 44, Jennifer Markovsky, 36, mother of two, and Ke'Arre Stewart, 29. He injured nine people, including five police officers. He was only arrested shortly before 5 p.m. five hours after the first emergency call.

Forces from the Colorado Springs Police Department , the El Paso Sheriff 's Office, and the State Patrol were on duty.

Perpetrator

After the arrest, the police said it was Robert Lewis Dear (* 1958).

US anti-abortion opponents accused “Planned Parenthood” of selling organs from aborted fetuses. Planned Parenthood immediately dismissed the allegations. The Tagesspiegel reported that Dear is said to have talked about "baby parts" when he was arrested. According to Dears acquaintances, he believed that attacks on abortion clinics were "God's work". In conversations, he expressed his admiration for the radical anti-abortion opponents of the Army of God network .

At a first brief hearing in Colorado Springs on December 1, 2015, Judge Gilbert Martinez stated that the initial indictment against Dears was loud "first degree murder."

On May 12, 2016, a Colorado court ruled that Dear was insane and therefore unfit to stand trial; it ordered her to be transferred to a mental hospital. Dear had quoted various conspiracy theories to a detective and psychologist, including that he believed Barack Obama to be the Antichrist .
